Yates is a human being originally from Fayetteville, North Carolina. He has presented work at numerous film festivals, publications, and museums worldwide, including the Asheville Art Museum, Los Angeles Filmforum, Photographer's Forum Magazine, Atlanta Film Festival, Cucalorus Film Festival, New Orleans Film Festival, Virginia Film Festival, and Indie Grits, amongst others. His work has also been featured on Vimeo, Pigeons & Planes, and VICE.

Currently, Yates is the first-ever Filmmaker in Residence at the Nickelodeon Theatre in Columbia, South Carolina. In addition to working on a new short film funded by the South Carolina Film Commission, Yates also teaches the after-school program "Come Around My Way" at C.A. Johnson High School.
